The brief

Working closely with a team of skilled professionals, we set out to to overhaul CIBC’s Investor’s Edge (IE) online Learn Hub. Serving as a visual designer on the team, I took the initiative to strategically choose impactful photographs, formulate refined graph guidelines, and put in place robust governance protocols. These contributions were instrumental in enhancing the project’s user experience.

Problem

Ensuring an optimal user experience within IE Learn Hub posed several challenges. The platform, which offers trading features and investment insights on various financial products, also includes two comprehensive introductory courses on investing and trading options. A vital challenge was making this multi-layered educational content universally accessible. This was crucial for ensuring an equitable user experience, especially for those with visual impairments who utilize screen readers or other assistive technologies. Failure to resolve this issue exposes the company to considerable legal risks, including potential violations of the Accessible Canada Act (ACA), that could lead to hefty fines.

Solution

To tackle the challenges effectively, I led robust governance protocols managed through Microsoft SharePoint, and facilitated real-time design collaboration using Figma. I also carefully selected appropriate images from Getty Images to ensure alignment with CIBC’s branding guidelines. Additionally, I developed a graphing guide for Investor’s Edge, laying down essential do’s and don’ts. Among the rules I set were the need to maintain a consistent colour scheme, label axes clearly, and provide a legend, while cautioning against the exclusive reliance on colours to convey meaning, omitting alt text, or using off-brand colours. This approach ensured that our project met its goals and achieved compliance with the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.
